The Sahara Summer, as it became known, of 2018 was welcomed by many but it did put gardens under incredible stress. Depending on who you listen to the predictions of this being repeated vary widely so the key is to not wait until it happens again before taking steps to help your garden. Lawns and plants can all be helped in developing robust root systems so when a long dry spell occurs again they'll be better prepared.
A simple Spring lawn care programme will give you a lawn to be proud of and keep it in perfect condition. The most important job for a fantastic lawn is correct and regular mowing. You need to cut the grass whenever it is growing - which is likely to be weekly or even more frequently as the weather warms up. Next on the priority list is feeding the grass, and feeding the right lawn food at the right time will produce a lawn to boast about. A good feed with a lawn fertiliser, not only makes the grass greener, but it makes it grow thicker and increases its strength, vigour and health so it is more robust and better equipped to compete with weeds, moss and weather-related stresses.
In Spring, the best results are achieved by using a granular feed that supplies a regular amount of nutrients over several weeks. When applying always read and follow the instructions and you'll have no problems.
No matter how many water butts you have around the garden you will never have enough water collected to cope with a Sahara summer so think beyond them and look at ways to stop the ground moisture from evaporating so quickly. A thick layer of woodchip bark is perfect as it prevents the sunlight from hitting the soil. Introducing drought tolerant plants to your garden will also help. Choose the right ones and intersperse them amongst others and they will create a living carpet that covers the soil. A few popular examples include Sedums, Lavender & Hebes - think of the plants you recognise when on holiday in sunnier climes and that will give you a few ideas. BUT don't be tempted to bring plants home from abroad. In recent times there has been much discussion about plant health and it is critical that you buy plants from reputable UK plant retailers.
